Why I was limping at work today

Well, now that we’re on the other side of winter (although we did have snow flurries today) I expect to have a little more to report on. To start things off, we had a very productive weekend down at Painted Post.

MB and Chris are putting a Brazilian eucalyptus hardwood floor in their dining room and we took a quick trip down to help.

First, we had to add a layer to the subfloor – arguably the most difficult part of the job. The screws didn’t want to bite unless you achieved the perfect balance of speed and torque. If you didn’t do it just right the screw would antagonizingly spin in its stripped-out hole rather than countersink into the plywood. Stupid screws. Here’s what it looked like after we finished the subfloor on Saturday afternoon:

Followed by many doses of ibuprofen on Saturday night and a good night’s rest, we laid down the rosin paper and started installing the actual floor on Sunday morning. I did the racking, sorting, and cutting, and Chris ran the nailer:

We didn’t get the entire floor done, but we did get past the door jambs, which is the hard part. We also got to install my favorite piece, which I dubbed “Big Brown.”

The kids had a great time creating trouble with their cousins, and we all had fun. I can’t wait to see the finished product – as soon as I can walk again.

A bit heavy on the melodrama and the ibuprofen comments, but…

If anyone is ever in need of a hardwood racker, John CAN NOT be beat, and he works cheap (just two beers and a pizza for a weekend of hard labor). A big tip of the hat from your brother in law, Mr. Sokolovic!

By the way, how are you with decks?
